Flooring Applications

ProTile™ Building Panels provide an ideal tiling surface over wood and concrete subfloors. Earning the industry’s highest rating for extra heavy duty and high impact use, ProTile™ Building Panels can be used in breweries, dairies – in both residential and commercial applications – with confidence. ProTile™ Building Panels are 100% waterproof. In addition to tile, ProTile™ Panels can be used under engineered wood floors to provide an extra layer of protection from moisture damage. ProTile™ Panels are also recommended for use with under tile heated floor systems to improve thermal efficiency and provide extra comfort by directing the heat into the room, rather than allowing it to sink into the substrate. ProTile™ Building Panels also function as a crack-isolation membrane and comply with ANSI 118.12.

To apply ProTile™ Building Panels over fully cured concrete, the floor must be clean and free of debris. A bed of modified thinset is applied to the concrete slab using a 5/16”notch trowel. ProTile™ Building Panels are set into the bed of thinset. Stagger the end joints of adjacent panel runs so that no seam continues throughout the length of the floor. For waterproof applications, a continuous ½” bead of ProTile™ Joint Sealant must be applied to the exposed foam edge before tightly butting another foam panel. Strike smooth any excess sealant. After the thinset has set, place an additional ½” bead of sealant over all joints and strike smooth. Joints should be covered a minimum of ¾” on either side of the seam. For dry area applications, after the thinset has set, apply 2” alkali resistant fiberglass mesh tape to all joints. Once the appropriate wet or dry joint application has been completed, you are ready to tile.

ProTile™ Building Panels provide a thermal break between the substructure and your tile. ProTile™ Panels are fully compatible with all electric and hydronic floor-warming systems. ProTile™ Building Panel’s thermal insulation properties help direct the heat up through your tiles, rather than being absorbed into the substructure. Please review the instructions for your heating and floor warming system for proper installation methods over backer board. Never install heating and floor warming systems under ProTile™ Building Panels. In hydronic heating systems, channels can be routed into ½” ProTile™ Building Panels. The water tubes are inserted into the channels and the surfaces are covered with alkali resistant mesh tape and thinset to create a level substrate before tiling.
